(Regular 5 min match)
The 2v2 Duos tournament (regular duo with no special rules) will be Soccar bare bones version with no special caveats; grab a partner and play off one another! (Regular 5 minute match)
The 3v3 Rumble tournament (3 per side with PowerUps!) - If you have ever played Mario Kart, the concept of the items is very similar but you are still trying to score on the opponents goal! (Reg 5 minute match)

\nTEAM SPECIALLY TRAINED ASSISTANT REFEREES \n

(Team S.T.A.R.s) All Teams must provide one volunteer adult who serves as an assistant referee to help at each game. The parent acting as Assistant Referee will still be able to watch the game - and will get the added advantages of being able to help out to make the experience better for the kids, getting a little exercise and getting a front row view. Training is in two parts: Online Modules and In-Person Field Training.

FAQ

Who Can Volunteer?

The volunteer must be an adult (over the age of 18) and not the coach or assistant coach of the team. Exception: If a team has a volunteer who is a currently licensed referee and who expects to attend most games, this person can serve in this role. A team may have more than one parent attend the course if they want.

Do S.T.A.R parents have to be Live Scanned?

Great question. The answer is no, unless that person is also on the roster as team staff (Team Manager or Trainer, for example).

What are the exact dates of the trainings?

Trainings occur in the winter before Spring season commences and in the summer before Fall season commences. We have to coordinate with SF Park & Rec to confirm our dates, since they have to grant us access to fields for the training. The dates will be posted above at right.

What happens if your Team S.T.A.R. is not available or out of town during the game?

Only one parent per team needs to be officially trained, but any soccer-knowledgable parent can do the job. Either have the S.T.A.R. share the training and/or have a soccer-knowledgable parent do the job that day. (On many teams, multiple parents rotate so one person isn't always responsible.)

What information do I need to provide to verify my S.T.A.R. parent?

You just need the name of your parent volunteer entered into the S.T.A.R. Registration Form prior to league play. During the season the S.T.A.R. is responsible for introducing themselves to the referee prior to the start of the match so that the referee can verify participation in their match report. A team is found noncompliant when they do not provide anybody to the role of S.T.A.R. during a match (trained or untrained) on more than 2 matches over a season. We'll be checking at summer's end (before Fall) and post season of Fall (before Spring).

There is a Financial Penalty for the season of $300 for teams that do not comply with the S.T.A.R. Program.

ADMIN REQUIREMENTS

There are multiple systems to navigate, but three are the most important:

\nCNRA (via GameOfficials.net): \n
\nProspective Referees must register with CNRA in order to get trained.\n
\nReturning Referees must renew your registration with CNRA in order to keep your certification current.\n
\nPENSRA (pensra.org)\n
This site requires a separate registration as well. It is where you will sign up for all SF Youth Soccer matches (and other league games as well - your certification makes you eligible to ref games in and out of San Francisco as well).
Report Game scores in PENSRA to get paid.
Make sure to include the name of the Team STARs in your report.

ADMIN REQUIREMENTS

There are multiple systems to navigate, but three are the most important:

\nCNRA (via GameOfficials.net): \n
\nProspective Referees must register with CNRA in order to get trained.\n
\nReturning Referees must renew your registration with CNRA in order to keep your certification current.\n
\nPENSRA (pensra.org)\n
This site requires a separate registration as well. It is where you will sign up for all SF Youth Soccer matches (and other league games as well - your certification makes you eligible to ref games in and out of San Francisco as well).
Report Game scores in PENSRA to get paid.
Make sure to include the name of the Team STARs in your report.

The trip is open to all youth in San Francisco leagues – our house leagues, regional travel leagues or a local school league. Attendees are not required to be currently playing in San Francisco Youth Soccer leagues – you are invited to join us if you just aren’t playing right now (e.g., Fall 2021) or you’ve aged out of the leagues we offer (i.e., 18+).

For at least the first few weeks of the season, we provide mentoring for the referees that sign up for matches that have a mentor assigned to it. New referees who obtain a license need to get a few games under their belt to develop confidence and experience to successfully officiate matches on their own. Often times a youth referee can have a poor experience and diminish their love for officiating; the mentor is there to make sure that does not happen.

With the expansion of the Mentor Program to our experienced youth referees, Youth Referee Junior Mentors will be able to train their peers; which in turn allows our adult referees mentors to offer intermediate level mentorship opportunities. This will not only help retain new referees but provide a more positive environment for the Players, Coaches, and Team S.T.A.R.s.

Our Senior Referee Mentors are experienced referees that can provide tips on making calls, crowd control, feedback on officiating to make things run more smoothly.

Self Assign

For these Matches you find a Match that meets your schedule and if you pass some rules, the Match is yours.
NOTE : To use Self Assign you must have a referee capability ranking.

Manual Assign

For these Matches you find a Match that meets your schedule and you request the Match from the Assignor. The Assignor may or may not offer you the Match. If the Match is offered to you, you then have the option to accept it.

How To Find Matches on PENSRA

Steps below:

Search for Matches at Referee: Inquiry

You may be overwhelmed by the '747 Cockpit' appearance of the criteria area. Don't despair. You can use this criteria area to winnow down and look for Matches of interest to you.
You can select by the hosting Club (SF Youth Soccer Rec or SF Upper House), the City, Dates or Location. Make some selections and click on 'Show'. Only those Matches that meet the criteria you have selected will appear. For example if you are a brand new referee, you may want to put 'Mine + Open' as the ARs criteria and 'Mine' in the Referee criteria and your home town in the City criteria.
When you click 'Show' a results list appears of the matches that meet the criteria. Nothing appears? The criteria are too strict. You control what appears in the results list by checking $\"checked\"$ the data you want in the criteria box.

Find a Match of interest to you.

Scan the Matches that appear in the Results List. If a Match is of interest to you, click on the hyperlinked Match number to see more details about this Match.
If there is an available Referee slot, the slot will have the $\"open\"$ 'Open' symbol.
If there is an plus symbol next to the $\"open\"$ $\"selfassign\"$ the Referee slot is available to you via Self Assign.
If there is an envelope next to the $\"open\"$ $\"mail\"$ the Referee slot is available to you via Manual Assign.

*U8 and U9 games are appropriate for referees with less than two years experience.

Self Assign

For these Matches you find a Match that meets your schedule and if you pass some rules, the Match is yours.
NOTE : To use Self Assign you must have a referee capability ranking.

For these Matches you find a Match that meets your schedule and you request the Match from the Assignor. The Assignor may or may not offer you the Match. If the Match is offered to you, you then have the option to accept it.

How To Find Matches on PENSRA

Steps below:

Search for Matches at Referee: Inquiry

You may be overwhelmed by the '747 Cockpit' appearance of the criteria area. Don't despair. You can use this criteria area to winnow down and look for Matches of interest to you.
You can select by the hosting Club (SF Youth Soccer Rec or SF Upper House), the City, Dates or Location. Make some selections and click on 'Show'. Only those Matches that meet the criteria you have selected will appear. For example if you are a brand new referee, you may want to put 'Mine + Open' as the ARs criteria and 'Mine' in the Referee criteria and your home town in the City criteria.
When you click 'Show' a results list appears of the matches that meet the criteria. Nothing appears? The criteria are too strict. You control what appears in the results list by checking $\"checked\"$ the data you want in the criteria box.

Find a Match of interest to you.

Scan the Matches that appear in the Results List. If a Match is of interest to you, click on the hyperlinked Match number to see more details about this Match.
If there is an available Referee slot, the slot will have the $\"open\"$ 'Open' symbol.
If there is an plus symbol next to the $\"open\"$ $\"selfassign\"$ the Referee slot is available to you via Self Assign.
If there is an envelope next to the $\"open\"$ $\"mail\"$ the Referee slot is available to you via Manual Assign.

SF Youth Soccer is excited to continue the Summer 4v4 clinic! The clinic will be focused on training the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade players in core skills and techniques, then applying them in a 4v4 small-sided game environment.

The clinic is also a training opportunity for brand new SFYS Junior Coaches as they will coach groups of players. Junior Coaches will be trained and guided throughout by the SFYS Clinic Master Coach and Director of Programming, Lee Dunne.

All sessions will be at the Paul Goode Field in the Presidio.

Why Junior Coaches

We have lots of high school age players, and sadly younger sometimes, that are beginning to age out of the playing leagues here in the city. This is especially true for recreational players.

Many love the game and want to keep involved, some also want the opportunity to earn a skill and earn some money.

Coaching is the perfect opportunity to give back to the game, to learn, and to even develop your own game given that you'll be experiencing it from a different view.

The training is provided by the Director of Programming, Lee Dunne, and his knowledge of training the coach will be key in developing confidence in the Junior Coach. The confidence is key to talk to parents about their player at the end of the session, it is also key to be personal with a player and to coach them on a 1:1 level - telling them how they can do better.

Youth Referee Summer Camps

In summer 2019, 27 youth participants took the inaugural SF Youth Referee Summer Camp and over 80% did not only their first game but also referee'd consistently for more than 5 of the 10 week season SFYS runs. These are unparalleled retention numbers that have not been seen in a youth referee pool, ever.

Building on the success of that camp, SF Youth Soccer is holding a 5-day Summer Youth Referee Camp Style Clinic Monday July 19th through Friday July 23rd). All participants will receive a full uniform on the first day of camp that will be required of them to wear during the camp. By the end of the week, your child will be a United States Soccer Federation certified referee, as well as an AYSO certified referee + be USYS, US Club and SAY Soccer certified [Subject to passing the USSF and AYSO referee test(s)].

Note* If you are a participant that is under the age of 13 you are not eligible to take the US Soccer Grassroots training per US Soccer mandates. You will, however, be able to be AYSO and SAY badged; granting you licensed referee status to officiate either SFYS Recreational or SFYS Upper House leagues, as well as AYSO or SAY local tournaments in the Greater Bay Area.

Important Logistical Clarifications

re: USSF Grassroots Referee Training vs. Youth Ref Camp

— Attending the camp is NOT a requirement to become a licensed referee.

— The ONLY requirement to become a USSF referee is the US Soccer Digital Learning Center online class and a single 3-hour field session. Any youth 13+ or adult may choose this option. A list of upcoming non-Ref Camp field sessions is available at the US Soccer Digital Learning Center website.

— Youth Ref Camp involves additional training beyond the USSF Grassroots requirements. (This is the precise purpose of the camp format for youth!)

Pre- and mid-season gatherings/pizza parties to groove you into the various systems, meet other refs, answer questions you might have about SFYS rules/procedures.

REF LOGISTICS

Referees are independent contractors that will access several different websites in order to secure matches to ref and also to report scores (requirement to get paid).

To get assignments, you will need to log on to the PENSRA Referee Assignment system. Once in the PENSRA site, it is important to pay attention to where the games are and the hosting organization so you can figure out reporting and any W-9 requirement or PayPal account issues.

Note that SFYS requires all referees to submit page 1 of the W-9 form filled out and signed by the referee. This includes minors. It may be emailed, faxed to 415-504-8133 or posted to: SF Youth Soccer, 1434 Taraval St, Suite A, San Francisco, CA 94116.

SF Youth Soccer runs both Fall and Spring soccer for SFYS Recreational and SF Upper House (competitive) play. PENSRA Match Reports must be submitted by every referee on the game in order to be paid.

We are hosting a Mental Health Awareness & Support Q&A on Zoom next Thursday, May 19, at 5:30 pm. This was designed and will be led by members of YAC in honor of Mental Health Awareness month. We will talk to two youth mental health experts about questions that help us learn more about how to take care of our own mental health, and support others too. SIGN UP HERE. Everyone in SFYS is welcome!\n
We are launching a Youth Referee FAQ Project, where members of our YAC create informative posts about their experiences as youth refs, and also explain rules that are important in understanding and creating a safe and fun environment for players, coaches, spectators, and refs.
