Week 5 - Fleet Week Affected Weekend of Games!
Fall 2022 Fleet Week. Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day Weekend.
Week 5 is coming!
Week 1-4 Wrap Up
This weekend is roughly the halfway mark of the season.
Here are some highlights and some considerations:
- Referee Assignment: SFYS is competing with private leagues that can pay 2-3x for referee coverage. How? The clubs that compete in these leagues also charge 4-20x more per player to participate. To recruit, retain and incentivize referees (who are independent contractors) to referee SFYS matches, SF Youth Soccer offers referee mentoring, an online Referee Discord community, weekly roundtables, a game day hotline and generous bonuses for those that ref 10+ games with us. Where possible, SFYS has Field Marshals to help with check in and manage field logistics. (We need more! Do you know an eligible candidate?) SFYS also requires that each team has a trained volunteer STAR, both to support the center referee and also to stand in in cases where a referee fails to show or where there is a shortage such that there is no referee available.
- Game Day Photo Roster Compliance: The GDPR is tangible proof to the other team and to the match official that the players in the match are rostered and insured, of appropriate age and eligible to participate. It is also the document that proves compliance with federal and state laws regarding background clearance, SafeSport and cardiac arrest/concussion training as well as that the coach is properly trained and licensed.
- Unrostered people hoping to coach or play are still trying to pull one over on the refs nearly every week. This is unacceptable. Warnings have been issued, bans are next. Please don’t cheat.
- Please use the week to get your roster ready for the weekend with guest players. If you have any issues with it, please reach out to info@sfyouthsoccer.com
- Sportsmanship: Overall, most of the reports from the referees and coaches who submit comments are positive. This is excellent news! Thanks for being so good to one another and to/for the players and keep it up.
Another busy weekend in the City…
- Fleet Week. Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day Weekend.
- Simply expect delays in crosstown traffic.
- Around Polo are some traffic updates from RPD also.
Important Planning Update
- Next weekend is Silent Saturday/Sunday.

For the good of the game…
