Celebrating Black History Month: YAC Spotlight - Briana Scurry!
Happy Black History Month! Read to find out about our first spotlight, Briana Scurry.
To celebrate Black History Month, YAC will be highlighting the Black players and organizations we most admire in the game. To start things off, we chose Briana Scurry, a legendary goalkeeper, member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, public speaker, and advocate.
When Scurry began her soccer career at the age of twelve, she was the only Black girl on her team. Even without Black female soccer players to look up to, Scurry drew inspiration from other sports and dreamed of being an Olympian — and became a permanent fixture on the team, earning 175 caps and 72 shutouts. For her first decade on the National Team, she was the only Black starter on the roster. Over the course of her exceptional 15-year career playing for the United States, she won two Olympic Gold Medals and a World Cup, including the iconic 1999 World Cup shootout save against China.
Scurry continues her amazing work off the field today. She advocates for awareness around concussions and brain injuries in women's sports, led by her own journey. She inspires all of us today to be brave and dream big.
