SFYS Premier division explained
What you need to know about the name change from Upper House
What is the new SFYS Premier division coming in Fall 2025? Formerly known as Upper House, we're simply making this group of teams the top flight in each grade-based division. Check out our list of FAQ's about this change, and let us know what other questions you may have so we can add those here!
-
When can my team make the move to SFYS Premier?
- Starting in 2nd grade, each flight will have an SFYS City division (formerly called recreational) and an SFYS Premier division (formerly called Upper House). If your team wants a more competitive experience, or has been playing in our Upper House division, you have the option to register them in the Premier division. Or, if your team has been playing in our recreational division and has won all (or most) of their games in a season, you might consider moving them up to the Premier division for the next season.
-
Will my team remain grade-based if we move up to Premier?
- Yep! All teams will remain grade-based for any play within any of our SFYS divisions, so kids can continue to play with their friends and classmates from 2nd - 12th grade. The team names may look a little different, just to differentiate them, but your roster doesn't have to change.
-
I know that middle school Upper House teams currently play 11v11 games. Will this change?
- Yes, and no. The middle school Premier division will play 9v9. This has many benefits, from smaller rosters to increased skill development. You can find more information on our post about small-sided games.
- During the transition, middle school teams already playing 11v11 may continue to do so (and you can also choose to play 9v9). New flights will be 9v9.
-
Upper House games have 3 referees assigned. Will this stay the same in Premier?
- Yes, every Premier game will continue to have 3 assigned referees (one center referee and 2 assistant referees (ARs))
